and TEAM CAMP is scheduled for Mar. 11-13 in St. George. We'll have a more specific agenda up here on the blog soon, but plan on a variety of rides for different levels and speeds. And we're working to coordinate some activities for non-riders if your partner or kids wanna come down, but don't love bikes as much as you do. This will be a great opportunity to pre-ride some of the Tour del Sol courses as well for those planning on doing that race.

We are excited about this upcoming cycling season.
It is time to get your 2011 membership and orders placed.

There will be 3 fittings this year.

Wednesday night from 5-7 at the Physical Therapy office in Park City (6531 North Landmark Drive 435.649.7335)

Friday night from 5-7 at the Physical Therapy Office in Heber (460 North Main Street in Heber)

Saturday from 12 noon to 3 PM at Revolution Bicycles in Sandy (8714 South 700 East 801.233.1400)

The clothing is a little different this year and we went with an Italian manufacturer.
If you have questions, please come and try it on.
We will have jackets, vests, long sleeve, womens, race fit and tri stuff.

All of the orders will be taken online this year with a credit card so you won't need to write a check and fill out a paper form.

Tour de Donut/Bunny Bradley Memorial and other weekend info

Hey everyone, tomorrow morning (July 17th) the organizers of the Tour de Donut have graciously offered to host a memorial ride for Bunny at the Tour de Donut in American Fork. The Tour de Donut starts at 9:00, but a short, memorial lap for Bunny will depart at 8:45. This will be a family-paced, slow ride for all who want to remember and honor Bunny. Many of Bunny's family, nieces, and nephews will be riding, so bring the family. If you wish to race the Tour de Donut, you will then be able to do that after the memorial ride. Much thanks to Rod Martin and the Rotary Club of American Fork for being so generous and accomodating.

If you are going to just do the memorial ride, please arrive by around 8:00 and look for the Bunny Bradley Memorial Ride table to register.

A group who want to get in more miles will be meeting in Draper to ride to the Tour de Donut, and then riding back over suncrest afterwards. If you are interested, please check with Adam Crayk for details. acrayk@academylegal.com

For you mountain bikers, A good size group will be getting together tomorrow at 8 at Snow park lodge at deer valley resort (where the deer valley icup race started) to ride the second half of the p2p race. Most plan on riding 50+ miles but you are welcome to ride as much as you would like. These trails are in great condition, with some steep and rocky sections, and one section of new (rough) trail. Bring plenty of water and food and take a look at the course map (bring it along with you) before you come. There are a lot of trails so the map/description will be helpful. We should have riders at varying levels so there will be several groups riding together. Should be a great ride and early enough to avoid the heat and hopefully trail traffic will be light. Feel free to forward this to anyone else you think would be interested in riding.

Kits are also available for pick up at Revolution. We're still waiting for a few items (arm warmers, long sleeve jerseys, vests), but you don't need those now anyway. And if you ended up with an extra pair of headphones, please let us know as a few people didn't get theirs.

A Great Loss

Elizabeth "Bunny" Bradley participating in her first Triathalon two weeks ago.

As many of you have probably heard, yesterday morning just before 7:00 am Elizabeth "Bunny" Bradley was struck head on by a pick up truck while riding with the women's group ride on Highland Drive in Draper. A truck drifted across the yellow line into oncoming traffic, collided with another car, and then continued on to hit Bunny head on. Other riders were injured but Bunny took the brunt of it.

Bunny was immediately attended to at the scene by passers by with medical experience, and then the EMTs who arrived. Within 15-20 minutes Life Flight arrived and transported her to University Hospital where the surgeons in the ICU did all the could to alleviate the swelling in her brain caused by the head-on collision with the truck. Unfortunately the trauma was too great, and shortly after midnight Bunny passed away.

This is a great loss for many in the Skullcandy cycling community. Bunny is family to many of us, and to others she was a great friend and inspiration. Although Bunny was relatively new to cycling as a sport, she was a strong and determined athlete with an infectious smile and positive attitude. She will be greatly missed.

Our thanks and gratitude go out to all those who stopped to help Bunny after the initial collision, the EMTs and Life Flight staff who arrived at the scene and transported Bunny to the hospital, and the surgeons and nurses who attended to her at the hospital.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to all of Bunny's family and friends, as well as to the other women who were injured at the accident.

Bunny leaves behind her husband and 2 young daughters. The family is collecting memories and pictures that you may have of Bunny to put together for her daughters. If you have anything you would like to share you can email it to:

I cup Soldier Hollow

With rain and snow the soldier hollow mtn race turned into a slick grass/mud fest. Skull Candy showed up in numbers and had some great performances. Duff Johnson pulled out an amazing ride placing 3rd in the Pro's with Aaron Stites coming in 9th. Duff currently is sitting 2nd overall in the pro's. Hopefully he can keep improving in a deep pro field. Calvin Prestwich raced for the first time and placed 3rd in beginners. Forest Johnson one of our amazing junior racers placed 1st and is bumping up to sport/expert for Draper. He will be able to help Evan Taylor who placed 4th on Sat knock a few riders off the podium. Arthur Morris placed 9th in his division. Good showing and fun time.

Next race will be on Monday May 31st in Draper. Fun course with tight technical descents on some of the best trails around. We should have a good turn out and afterwards we will have a team meeting and a potluck bbq lunch. So come on out and race or just stop by to support the racers and eat some good food.

Congrats to Kassidy Johnson who placed 3rd at sundance as well as Forest 3rd, Arthur 8th, and Duff 8th. Love the pink Skull Candy Jersey!

Sorry if you stopped by Revolution on Saturday to pick up the kits and they weren't there yet. We had the kits at the Downtown Crit for everyone who let us know they would be down there, but didn't have a chance to get them to Revolution until today. Sorry about the miscommunication, but they're ready for pickup now.

If you are in Heber or Park City, Brandon Judd picked up your order and took it up to either Brothers Bikes or his office at Kimball Junction (Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine).
A few of the items did not come in, most notably women's bibs in pink, so a few people will notice their orders are not complete. We are trying to track down the missing items and will let you know as soon as possible the status on those.

If you found that what your ordered does not fit as well as you expected, use the google group to try to arrange a swap with someone else.

We've also had quite a few requests to order more stuff since people have been picking up their orders. We can attach these to the 2nd order, but need to have any new orders by this friday (may 14th). Please download an app from the blog and send it in. Unfortunately if you just email and let us know you want more of something, it tends to get lost, so please send in an order form to ensure we get it.

First off, good luck to Kevin Parry, Mike Rossberg, and Nancy Russell who will be competing in the St. George IronMan this weekend!!

Good luck to everyone competing in Antelope island road race tomorrow as well. Look for the skull candy pop up tent and come and get an AGEL protein gel or a Winder Dairy chocolate milk recovery drink after the race.

Tomorrow is also the 5-mile pass MTB race, out past Lehi. To register or for more info, check out the Intermountain Cup website.

If you're not racing tomorrow, but want to get a group ride in, we will be meeting at Revolution at 8:00 am for a 2-3 hr. group ride. Come join us!

Remember the deadline for the 2nd kit order is this upcoming monday, May 3. Please drop your application (available here on the blog) off at Revolution, or mail it to the address listed on the app (though at this point you're safer to drop it off at revolution).

Most of the first order is in, we are just waiting for two more shipments that we hoped to see yesterday or today, but haven't arrived yet. As soon as we get it, we'll sort and get it ready to distribute. We're as excited to get it as you are, so we'll let you know as soon as it's ready.

East Canyon

Great to see so many people from the team at East Canyon yesterday, and the weather couldn't have been any more perfect.
Congrats to Tyler for a stong 6th place finish in the men's 3.

Boise national quailifer mountain bike race

Last weekend Duff Johnosn and Aaron Stites raced up in Boise Idaho at the Barking Spider mountain bike race. With big winds and a big field Duff and Aaron took first and second in their category. The Skullcandy jerseys were the talk of the race and the Specialized epics ripped the course. Next race will be Fruita Colorado and then May is the big race month with the Icup series. Look for the Skullcandy tent at the races and come out and join in the action.

Intermountain Cup racing begins!

This Saturday marks the beginning of the ICup series. The race this weekend is in St. George and looks to be a fast course and tons of fun. The skull candy team will be there and will have the skull candy tent set up. So if you can make it stop by, we will be warming up together and talking race/feeding strategies.

The Utah Crit series starts this Saturday, March 6th (weather permitting) out at Rocky Mountain Raceway. We will meet at Revolution at 10:20 (roll out at 10:30) to ride out to RMR.

A/B flight goes off at noon
C/D off at 1pm.
And there will be a Beginner Skills Clinic at 1:10pm. This is a great way to start racing if it's something you haven't tried yet.
They will also be offering a women's race series this year.

The RMR races run on saturday through the end of March and then go to tuesday night for the rest of the year.
DMV starts the first wednesday in april, and there is either a TT or a hillclimb every Thrusday night

Call your senator to support HB 91: Traffic Control Signs for Bicycles

HB 91: Traffic Control Signs for Bicycles, sponsored by Rep. Spackman Moss, will allow cyclists to proceed through a red light after they have come to a complete stop if the light is programmed to turn green only with the arrival of a motor vehicle and does not recognize the cyclist. HB 91 has passed through the Utah House of Representatives and is now in the Senate. Please call or email your senator and express your support for this bill.
We've all been frustrated waiting for lights to change that don't recognize our arrival at the intersection. This will change the law so that it will be legal to go through a red light after we have stopped and provided there is no cross traffic (obviously).

Hey everyone, just a quick reminder that kit orders and membership forms for the first order are due tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 22. If you mailed your application, please shoot us an email with your kit order in case it gets delayed in the mail.

If you got the reimbursement for racing last year ($165 including timing chip) you can apply that to your order for this year.

Revolution is also offering a sale of 40% on helmets for our team (and their mtb team) on a first come, first serve basis for 40 helmets. This goes for helmets in stock, or special orders.

And weather permitting, we'll start organizing saturday group rides again starting the first weekend in february (feb. 6).

From the e.mails and calls we have been getting lately, some of you are getting excited for the 2010 cycling season.
Others of you are thinking that biking season is still 5 months away.
Either way, we are getting ready to put in our first of two orders in for this year.
The first order cutoff will be Friday, January 22nd. We must have your check (or cash), order form, and signed club and release forms by the 22nd to be included on this order.
The second order will be later in the spring.
The production of the clothing is approximately 8 weeks so we want to get going now so we can get it in time for march events.
The clothing manufacturer has changed and although the sizing is very similar, if you want to be sure, we are offering a few opportunities for you to come and try on the clothing to get the proper sizing.
This year we are using an upgraded pad for added comfort on those LOOONG rides.
WE will have fitting opportunities tomorrow, Friday January 15th at Revolution Bikes from noon until 7 PM and again all day Saturday January 16th at Revolution from 10 until 5.

We are going to have a spring training/riding camp in St George over the February 18, 19, 20 and 21st weekend.

We will also be having a spring kickoff party a little later, to let everbody have a chance to get to know the club and find people to ride with.

We are trying to decide between two slightly different jersey designs and we would like your vote on which one to produce.

A Great Year and More in Store for 2010

As 2009 wraps up and the cyclocross seasons draws to a close, we are in the final stages of locking up sponsors for the 2010 season.
We had a lot of state champs in both mountain bike, and Road biking disciplines as well as lots of great results in many of the other races including triathlon and cyclocross.

Building on the success we had in 2009, we will be providing more of the same with more and new programs for next year.
Once we get the sponsors set in stone in the next week or so, we will be revealing the Kit designs for next year.
We will be placing an order in mid January so we can have the goods in time for next years season.

170 miles with some gravel road, a large rabbit that took some people out (not a joke), a long grind up the backside of Mt Baldy, warm temperatures and wind. Truly an epic ride or race.

Spudman 09

Congrats to the hand full of guys that were lucky enough to get in and that went up and did the spudman triathlon in Idaho last weekend.
We had several Skullcandy members complete the olympic distance event.
Notably, Adam Clark took 2nd in his age division with a blazing 2:07.54 over the 1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run course.
If you don't like swimming, this downriver swim is the route for you.
Registration for next years lottery will open January 4, 2010 for the event on July 31 of 2010.

Chalk Creek Road Race

With it being the State Championship Road Race for Masters and Juniors, there were some larger than normal Masters Categories. The weather was much better this year than last years 95 degree temps.

DC tried and tried to get into or set-up a break and finally succeeded in getting into the winning 4 man break in the Cat 3's 80 mile race. Matt played the dutiful team mate and sat in and did nothing. DC ended up with a 3rd place in his first real Cat 3 race.

After the race, DC was quoted saying "It was a hard fast race, but my legs felt good so i knew i had to have a go. After we finally established the break, my legs were on fire, but I just stayed focused. Unfortunately didn't have the legs for the final kick at the end but i can learn from this race and build on it for next time."

The Cat 4's and Cat 5's saw some fast action and some good attacks, but nothing strong enough to stay away for the full 50 miles. Both races came down to an uphill bunch sprint with Brandon Perry slotting in at 4th in the 5's.

The Masters 35B Category was the largest field of the day and we had some good numbers there from our team. After several furious attacks for the first 15 miles proved fruitless, the race settled down a bit for the next 10 miles until the turnaround. Kracht tried a few times to get away but there were a few guys at the front of the group that weren't going to let him go. The most dangerous rider in the group was from Spin Cycling and we had some great teamwork to get on his wheel when he attacked or guys to shutdown any of his attacks. In the end, this race also stayed together for an uphill, bunch sprint. Seth ended up coming around the wheel in front of him about mid way up the 3/4 mile finishing climb and was able to hold off the field to be crowned the Masters 35B state champ with Brandon Judd coming in 5th.

After the race, Seth said "I was hoping to get Kracht into a break so that his Cyclocross conditioning could take over and he could drill it to the line. Unfortunately the right guys never got up the road together. Crayk took over and worked at the front like an animal keeping it together until the last corner. After all of the work he did, I just had to give it my all."

Capital Reef Classic Stage Race

We had some good numbers down in Torrey, Utah this year for the 2nd Annual, 2 day, 3 stage Capital Reef Classic Stage Race.

Friday morning there was an 8.5 mile individual time trial, Friday afternoon was a circuit race on a hard, 17 mile course with short punchy climbs. Depending on the category, you would do 1, 2 or 3 laps on this course. Saturday morning presented the long road race with either a 50 mile or 81 mile course with some serious climbing on the long course.

The temperature was a bit warmer down there this year than last year but, still 15 degrees cooler than in Salt Lake City.

Sam Clark won the Cat 5 circuit race on friday afternoon with a solo break on the 2nd half of the course.

Tyler Kirk was 2nd in the TT, third in the circuit race and 3rd on the road race to get into the money with a 2nd over all in the GC. Tyler wanted to dedicate this race to his wife who couldn't be there this weekend because she was home with their newborn son.

It is a great venue, with wonderful volunteer support and a difficult but fun race that will certainly continue to grow over the next few years.

We had some good numbers for a difficult year up big cottonwood canyon.
There was a head wind up most of the canyon which had a tendency of having everybody's times a few minutes slower than in past years.

HYPOTHERMIA CLASSIC or HIGH UINTAS STAGE RACE

Skull Candy had a good showing in the first stage; the “over the top” or Kamas to Evanston Road Race. Skull Candy was represented with racers in a variety of categories including: Cat 5, Cat 4, Masters 35+ B, Masters 55+, Competitive Citizens and Cat 4 women. Before the race began the weather was a big question mark. There were some light sprinkles with looming dark clouds and everyone was questioning how to dress. Before the Cat 4’s started Gary Bywater (the race official) commented on how lucky we were. He said the group before us had the storm following them up the mountain. As he is saying this, everyone is looking behind him at the big dark cloud rolling our way and not feeling lucky at all. As the race got started the roads were fairly dry and everyone was pulling arm warmers and vests off. However, as the steepest pitches of the climb began, so did the rain. At first it started out as a drizzle, but by the time most were cresting the summit, the deluge had begun. Tyler K. bagged the KOM going over the top almost 2 minutes ahead of the chasing group, proving to those who don't know...that boy can climb!
Needless to say, vest and arm warmers began to come back on and the smart ones pulled out their rain capes. The decent was treacherous, not because of the steep pitch or winding roads, but because the hypothermia began to set it. At this point the battle became more than just physical endurance; it became a mental battle of will. Every rider was shaking uncontrollably and struggling to keep their bike upright. Vision was blurred and several were seeing stars. Everyone tried to push on, but soon legs were turning blue, heart rates were skyrocketing and body temperatures were plummeting. Somewhere around the 2nd feed zone the smart ones pulled the plug. Those who were to stupid or crazy continued on. At the finish they opened up the Evanston Hospital so all the riders could take shelter and warm up. They provided nice big warm blankets/towels and hot chocolate. However, the hypothermia shakes ensured that most of the hot chocolate ended up on the floor. Everyone was glad to be done and no one wanted to see their bikes for a while.
As it turned out, those with earlier start times fared better than those with later ones. While some citizen categories had completely dry rides, the cat 4 and 5 groups took a drink from the fire hose.
Due to the circumstances of the day, the race promoters chose to modify the stages that would count towards overall General Classification Standings. They determined that the Road Race and the TT would be the only stages counting toward GC. The crit would be run as an independent race. Probably smart on their part as the crit field could have been pretty small considering those who abandoned the road race.

At the start of the TT conditions looked threatening again, and it was raining hard again by 9 am. Matt Bradley took 2nd in the Cat 4, TT finishing only 3 seconds behind the winner, he was on fire. Nice Job Matt! I guess that new speedy TT machine is doing him well.

State Road Championships

You can't make this face and take second.
Luckily for DC, he took 1st place in the sprint which makes him the Cat 4 State Champion, and makes that face justifiable.
Now if someone could just teach DC to zip up his jersey for the finishing sprint pictures, he would be set. Nice work!

Congrats likewise to Mike Kracht for a podium finish in the 35+B category with 3rd place.

Garden Creek Gap Road Race

A few guys made the looong drive up to Arimo, ID to do the Garden Creek Gap race on Saturday. The weather was perfect and the road was dotted with fresh cow manure from someone moving their cattle from one pasture to another on that morning before the race started.

They changed the course this year so everybody did one less climb but making it logistically better to have the start and finish at the same place instead of 8 miles apart.

Kracht was up in front for the whole race and felt good about making the selection up the 2nd climb, taking 4th place in the final uphill push for the line in the 35+b race.
In the cat 4 race, matt and DC attacked early and often, on the first lap. The first climb got it down to 8 riders with our eric and tyler in the lead group. Seth came over the climb a few seconds later but spent the first half of the second lap trying to chase back on to the lead 8. After a few guys got together, seth got on with 3 others making the lead group 12 strong. They kept the pace fast enough to stay away from the rest of the pack that was chasing behind. Matt and DC sat on and watched everbody burn themselves up right before the climb the second time. The lead group had enough to charge up the hill the second time with tyler taking 2nd at the line and eric not far behind in 7th.Tyler holding his 2nd place envelope of what turned into gas money for the long drive home
This happened to matt at the 1km to go mark. He was happy that although he walked the last kilometer, he still did not take last.

Sugarhouse Crit

We had good numbers for the 4, 5 and 35+b race.
Weather was perfect and the fields were big.

The cat 5 race was fast, but stayed together to the finishing sprint.
although Luper is getting smarter, he made a mistake and led out the Spin rider that came around him and took him at the line.
Still a great 2nd place finish and enough for his upgrade. Judd came in 4th place, just back of the winner.The cat 4 race and the 35+b races were fast and we sat back until halfway into the race to do anything.
DC and the Robot attacked with 5 laps to go in the 4 race but only stayed off for a lap since the group was driving it so hard. With a lap to go, a canyon rider attacked and soloed to the victory as we all sat and watched him ride away. It had been so fast up to this point, no one thought he would stay away but everyone soft pedaled and watched him. Seth sprinted it out and took 4th in the 4's.
The 35+b race was similar but we all already had a race in our legs. Sit back and wait until late in the race. You would think that we would have learned from the 4 race, but we sat and watched a guy attack with 1/2 a lap to go and win as seth again sprinted it out for 4th.
We attacked but couldn't get anything to stick.

Stan Crane Memorial Draper Mtn Bike race

The original plan for the Stan Crane ICUP race was basically 3 laps up Clarks and 3 Laps down Ghost Falls. I think everyone was both excited and terrified to be racing this course. Last year if you remember the rain postponed the event from the originally scheduled monday, memorial day to a mid-week wednesday night race. This year looked as if the same thing would happen. At 7am the emails started coming in saying the start times would be moved back an hour to let the course dry. This would have put the start time at 10am. As it got closer to 10am, it was decided that the course would have to be “modified” to protect the crown jewel trails of Clarks and Ghost Falls. This modification to most everyone was not well received as it was thought the new route would be “flat and boring”. The groups would also be split into 2 starting flights. The Sport/Beginners would go at 11:15 and the Expert/Pros would go at 1:00pm.

The new race route, as it turned out, was neither flat nor boring (1000 ft of vertical per lap and a screamer downhill). Skullcandy had some good representation at the event and would have even been stronger if the event would have started on time (a bunch of guys had Memorial Day plans with the family that trumped racing). All in all it was a great course and a ton of fun. Attached is a map of the route. Here are some of the results from the team.

Derek Leyde state championship crit report

I wish i had a picture of Mike Luper crossing the line after a perfectly timed sprint for the cat 5 win, but i was too busy cheering for him and forgot to try to snap a pic with my camera phone. Anyway, Congrats to Luper for a strong finish. He learned his lesson in some past races, held his position and attacked at exactly the right moment. Now if we can just get him to stay in town long enough to do some more races and get his upgrade!

In the cat 4 race Dave C. Erik M. and I rode hard, pushed the pace, chased down attacks, but none of us had much at the end, especially going against those stinking speedskaters with legs like tree trunks. lesson learned: keep the pace high to pop those guys off the back so they don't make it to the sprint.

The three of us then joined Seth for the 35+B race. Dave and Seth took up position near the front and held that for most of the race. I chased down a couple of attacks by spin, but ultimately it was hard to keep track of the lappers and the attackers. With about three laps to go there were two spin riders off the front. Dave and Seth had been driving the chase, so i went up and pulled for a lap to close the gap. Dave paced me to pull within reach of the two off the front without totally reeling them in. With two laps to go Dave drilled it, caught the two spin riders and crossed the line first pumping his fists in victory. It wasn't until seth told him we still had a lap to go that he realized he had miscounted. He had done his job, however, and set seth up in perfect position for the final lap. Seth came around the final corner and held onto Inacio's wheel for 2nd place.
Then we were told there were actually two riders up the road. We had lost track amidst all the lappers. Bummer! This is the 2nd time Seth thought he had a 2nd place finish only to be dropped to 4th (two guys snuck off the front last year at Lotoja, and we think, jumped in on other groups and finished ten minutes ahead of our main field—cheaters!) and the 3rd time he's been dropped in the final results. Last week at antelope island he went from 4th to 8th after they awarded Dave and his group of four 1-4 positions after a bum steer from the officials.

Now i know last week after Dave did a lap more than the rest of us and Seth polled "king or dunce"? i voted king. After his miscount this week, however, i have recanted my vote and now vote dunce. As Pasternaky aptly commented to me at DMV tonight, we need to get a team car and radios just to help DC keep track of where he is. Pay attention kids, too much home brew will rot your brain cells.

Womens Only Group Ride

We will be heading towards Draper on 700 East.

It will be an easy pace.... NO DROP RIDE... approximately 1 1/2 hours long.

Antelope Island; An Epic Race of Adverse Conditions

The temperatures were in the 40's and it was raining and windy. Most people just wished they stayed in bed. I don't have final placings since they haven't posted them yet and it was too cold to stick around and wait for them at the finish.
I did see a couple guys get into the ambulance with hypothermia, but luckily no one from our team was hospitalized.
We had guys racing in a bunch of different groups from the 4's to the 5's (who had 2 groups) and the 35b's.
In different conditions that could be a fun course, but these conditions made it crazy. Potholes covered with water so you couldn't see them. The air was so salty that you could taste it and it felt like you were at the ocean. Maybe it was the water that was coming off the tire in front of me and into my mouth that i could taste.
I realize we live in a desert and we are in a drought, but having a Saturday race without rain could be nice.

Now to the poll of the week:
HERO OR DUNCE?
DC showed up to the start of the race complaining that he might have the swine flu and he wasn't feeling good and was probably going to pull out after a lap or 2.
The race started and within the first mile DC was off the front attacking. A couple team mates tried to stay with him but couldn't hold his wheel. They sat up and the group caught them. Within 45 seconds, DC and a few other guys attacked again. This time getting off and puting some time into the main group. They had a break established before the group was even off the causeway.
Now some history about DC. He is a highly educated man who has been successful in the business field. He is happily married to a beautiful woman with 2 kids. You would think he would be able to count to 3.
After coming off the causeway, he was supposed to do 3 laps and then turn right on the ranch road and go to the end then turn around and come back. This would put the race at around 37 miles, which is short of the 40 miles they claimed the race to be.
DC was in was the group off the front, so they got a motorcycle to lead them out. There were course marshals to help point the direction as well. After finishing their third lap, the motorcycle was leading them on another lap, when they got ready to turn, the course marshals told them not to turn and to do another loop.
The main group that was chasing, turned on the 3rd lap and now became the lead group. The 4 guys in DC's group now became the chase group doing and extra lap.
Do you disagree with course marshals and turn when you think you know you should, or do you follow what they are telling you to do?
DC followed what the marshals said to do and finished a few minutes after the leaders because they ended up doing an extra 4 miles.
In the end, the officials listened to their protest and rightfully moved them to placings 1-4 instead of in the 30's somewhere. They deserved it because they were definitely the strongest riders on the day.
After the race, i was standing as close as i could to DC, trying to catch some germs and even stole a drink from his waterbottle when he wasn't looking, hoping to catch whatever it is he thinks he has, because he rode like a man possessed. He is my hero, even if he can't count.

East Canyon

We certainly had numbers for both the 4's and 5's.

The weather looked menacing but it cooperated during the whole race and waited until we were back at the cars before snowing.

Most of the 4's were content to parade out to the turn around and back to the climb before letting the fireworks begin. Matt wasn't about to let that happen. After setting a good pace up the first climb and then sending attack after attack on the way out, we knew not much would stick but wanting to soften the legs of a few of the good sprinters that like to go to the front and bring back the attacks. Besides, who really wants to ride for 2.5 hours in z 3 just to sprint it out?

On the way back, we attacked some more and even got a little help from the Spin boys to help animate the race, but in the end it came down to the final climb. A few got off the front and Tyler brought some of them back, but not all. We had 3 in the top 10 in the 4's and 3 in the top 10 in the 5's with Luper taking a strong 2nd.

Deadline for the 2nd order of kits, vests, etc. is Monday, April 20th. This is the last order we will do this year, so if you have any other friends, relatives, etc. who want to get on board make sure they leave an application and check at Revolution by monday. Likewise, if you love your kit so much you want another one, or you didn't get a vest or long sleeve jersey on the first order and now you want one, Monday is the deadline. We must have checks and order forms in hand. If you're a new club member we need the whole application. If you are reordering, we just need an order form. Both are available here on the blog.

And a quick reminder that we now have over 80 members of the club. Skull Candy generously donated 75 earbuds to us, but these have all been distributed to the first 75 members of the club, so any orders from here on out will not come with headphones.

Also, there are quite a few saturday ride options for tomorrow. Some of us are meeting at 7:00 am at revolution for a 3-4 hr. ride. Some are going to be pre-riding the East Canyon RR course, and there's another group meeting for a afternoon ride. There should be enough options for you to get out and ride around your kids' soccer schedule, and best of all, it's supposed to be warm(er) and sunny. A nice break from the rain and sleet.

Tour of the Depot report

Congrats to Dave C. and Kevin P. who both had podium finishes in Saturday's circuit race. Kevin took 3rd in the cat 5 division and DC redeemed his TT dropped-chain time with a 2nd place finish in the Cat 4s. We had a good-sized group racing the cat 5s with Brandon J. putting in a good circuit race finish as well, and John P., Don B., and Mike R. also racing.

In the cat 4s we decided to race an aggressive race and try to get a break or soften-up the field since none of us are too strong in the sprint. From the first lap of the circuit race we attacked on the short climb and kept it up on the 2nd and 3rd laps as well. Seeing that nothing was going to stick we put ourselves in good position for laps 4 & 5 and tried to be in place for the final, downhill sprint. It paid off for Dave who found a good line right into 2nd place.

For Sunday's road race we decided on a similar strategy: attack, attack, and counterattack and hope something sticks. Matt got off the front with a couple of other guys going up the slight ascent on the back side of the lap back into G-ville, and they held it off for a while, but eventually the main group reeled in the leaders and despite our best efforts we couldn't get an attack to stick. The sprint finish at the end of sunday's race was similar to saturday's circuit race: downhill and fast. Unfortunately neither dave nor matt had it to pull in a podium, but we both felt good about our efforts and we're looking forward to east canyon with a little more climbing.

Lotoja and East Canyon RR registration

Registration for Lotoja 2009 (Sept. 12) opened today.

Registration is also open for East Canyon Road Race (April 25). For East Canyon you have to mail in your registration form available from the sports am website, or stop by canyon bicycles in Olympus Hills Mall.

Both of these races sell out (and Lotoja actually uses a lottery system now, with preference given to past riders), so if you plan on riding them, register now.

We just created a facebook group for Skullcandy/JSA Architects Cycling. We figured this was a better way for people to control how much they participate, converse, organize for races, rides, etc. than blasting your inboxes all the time. If you're on facebook join the group (just do a search for skullcandy/JSA and it should come up), post your photos, get in touch with others to set up rides, and have fun on those bikes.

If you didn't get a chance to pick up your kit last saturday they are still at Revolution. You can stop by anytime during regular business hours and pick it up.

Hell fo the North Race

The race lived up to it's name.
With snow coming down at the start of the 4 and 5 race, it was going to be an epic race of attrition.
Many of the racers opted to ride cyclocross rigs due to the mud and gravel conditions on the west section.
Our team controlled the 4 race which started with around 35 guys. After repeated attacks and driving the tempo, the Skull Candy team whittled it down to about a dozen riders in the final of 5 laps.
Unfortunately with many of our team going with cyclocross bikes, the gearing did not lend itself well to a bunch sprint.
We did have 4 of the top 10 spots but missed the top three by 1.
In the cat 5 race we had a 4th, a 7th and one who was just happy to finish.
We are Looking forward to the tour of the depot stage race next weekend and controlling the race and doing some damage. We should be out in full force in the 4's and 5's and getting some upgrade points.
after a bold move and attacking and being off for half of the last lap, Mike Luper built up 150 meter gap on the gravel section, but got caught by the chasing peleton with 100 meters to go and came in 4th.

Nice to ride with everyone who came down to St. George. We had great, sunny, dry weather (despite a bit of wind on saturday), and got some good miles in. Thanks especially to Megan and Jenn for putting together the BBQ saturday night and feeding so many hungry cyclists (and a bunch of their kids).

Congrats as well to all the guys who did well at the Red Rock Rampage. I haven't seen the results yet, but heard good things.

Now that race season is started we'll be riding out to RMR on saturdays to race for the next few weeks. A/B flight is at noon, C/D flight is at 12:50. If you haven't raced, this is a great way to start and get some experience. If you plan on racing (even just the crits), you will need to buy a USAC license (https://www.usacycling.org). You can buy a one-day license if you are racing in the C or D flight, but if you plan on racing much at all in terms of crits or road races, it's worth it to buy the license. At this point, you should also print the "permission to ride" form when you renew/buy your license since the license probably won't come in the mail in time. Also remember to select "Skull Candy/JSA architect" as your team and email us your license no. (skullcandyracing@gmail.com)

Of course, we hope to continue saturday club rides as well if you want to ride, but don't necessarily want to race. If you are interested in helping coordinate these, please let us know.

And finally, we will also be organizing some ladies' rides, so watch for those as well.

Spring Training in St. George, Mar. 5-8

Get some spring miles in and enjoy the warm weather and a change in scenery. The current weather forecast for SLC for this weekend is snow and rain, but the St. George forecast calls for temps in the 60s and mostly sunny (except for a little rain on saturday). What better excuse do you need to load up and head south?

Some people will be heading down early thursday to get in a short ride thursday afternoon, and others will be heading down thursday afternoon. The basic plan is to ride to Mesquite by way of old highway 91 on friday (11o miles or so with a good climb both directions), then ride from St. George to the Zion park entrance on saturday (another 100 miles or so, mostly flat with rollers), though some people are taking down mountain bikes to do the opening race of the Intermountain Cup MTB series (http://www.intermountaincup.com/race/) on saturday as well.
On sunday some of us will get out for a shorter ride like the Gunlock loop (40 miles or so with a couple short, steep climbs).

Of course, if you dont' want to ride those distances, or if you can't come down until friday or saturday, don't let that stop you. There are plenty of riding options regardless of how far or how fast you want to ride.

TIMING CHIP REMINDER

The first races of the year are fast approaching! All riders racing UCA events this year will be required to purchase or rent a timing chip.

The price is $40.95. This is a one time charge, and the chips will be good for several years. This is a small price to pay for more accurate and timely scoring.

Chips will be available at UCA events for the one-day rentel fee of $10.00, Sportsbase will have representatives there at assist you if you don't want to purchase a chip and need to rent one.

You MUST use a credit card if you want to rent a chip at the races. Please be aware of this fact.

We're now registered with USA Cycling and UCA, so if you're going to race this year, when you renew your license select "Skull Candy/JSA architects" in the drop down box for teams. Once you're registered, please also email your license number and category to skullcandyracing@gmail.com.
If you already renewed or bought your license before we had the team registered, let me know and i'll pass your license number and name on to the USA Cycling rep and she will change it for you.

Short extension on kit orders

We got the artwork in and proof approved and have put a deposit on the kits, but Jay at Blackbottoms tells me we have a few more days to finalize the numbers, SO, we will take applications and additional team gear orders until Saturday, Feb. 14 (yes, it's Valentines Day).
You can mail these and your check to the address on the bottom of the application, or drop them off at Revolution (8714 S, 700 E). Applications can be downloaded from the previous post here on the blog or picked up at Revolution.

Applications and kit orders

We're going to be placing an order for kits by this friday, so please get your orders in as quickly as you can. Melissa at Revolution in Sandy (700 E. 8714 S.) has a Blackbottoms fit kit if you want to try on jersey and bibs before ordering.

You can mail the applications and checks to the address on the bottom of the application (we need a hard copy with your signature for insurance), but to make sure you get your kit order in by the Thurs, feb. 5 deadline you can also email your completed application and order form to skullcandyracing@gmail.com and then mail the hard copy and check.

You can also drop off your application and check to Melissa at Revolution before Thursday 5:00 pm (we'll probably do a second order in the future, but if you want to get in on the first kit order we need to submit that by this friday, Feb. 6).

Bike Club Mission Statement
The Skull Candy cycling club seeks to provide a environment focused on participation in epic rides such as centuries, double centuries, charity rides, fund raisers etc. Such events might include: the “Cycle Salt Lake Century,” the “MS 150” or Dave Zabrizkie’s “bikes for kids.” The club focus will be to develop riders of all abilities and experience levels. We also believe in being good advocates of the sport of cycling including proper representation of cycling rules/laws and creating motorist awareness to promote bicycle safety.
RACE TEAM MISSION STATEMENT
The Skull Candy race team seeks to provide a true team racing environment for intermountain west races with a focus on Utah based races. We believe that through solid teamwork, training and planning we can control races and put our various riders in top podium positions. Our team focus will be primarily for Category 4 and Category 3 races. However, it is also our intent to develop new riders/cat 5 racers and help them advance to cat 4 and 3 racers. We believe that a unified team effort will lead to a positive and prominent recognition for the race team and its Sponsors. In order to promote the team and its sponsors, each team member is committed to racing in at least 10 events per year. Of those 10 events at least 2 must be in high profile/large attendance events such as LOTOJA or the Porcupine Hillclimb. In addition, each team member will participate as often as possible in the local weekly criterium series. This series typically consists of 2 weekly crits, a time trial (every other week) and bi-monthly hill climbs. We believe in being good advocates of the sport of cycling including proper representation of cycling rules/laws and creating motorist awareness to promote bicycle safety.
